Family Style open mic series—Friday, October 15, 7:30 p.m. at Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street Philadelphia, PA 19107. Hosted by YELLOW RAGE (Michelle Myers and Catzie Vilayphonh), the popular monthly Asian American open mic FAMILY STYLE welcomes extended “family” from all communities and cultures. Costs $5-10 sliding scale admission.
Cindy Blackman and Another Lifetime—Friday, October 15, 5-8:45 p.m. at Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19130. Drummer Cindy Blackman has performed in Lenny Kravitz’s band as well as with her own group. Having studied at the Berklee College of Music, she can effortlessly move from straight-ahead jazz to rock to funk. She will play in a trio with guitarist Aurelien Budynek and bassist Felix Pastorius. Free after museum admission.

510 Readings Series—Saturday, October 16, 5 p.m. at Minas Gallery, 815 W. 36th Street
Baltimore, MD 21211. Featuring Brian Evenson is the author of ten books of fiction, most recently the limited edition novella Baby Leg, published by New York Tyrant Press in 2009; Joanna Howard is the author of the story collection On the Winding Stair and the chapbook In the Colorless Round; Matt Bell is the author of How They Were Found, a collection of fiction from Keyhole Press; and Carolyn Parkhurst is the author of three novels—The Nobodies Album, The Dogs of Babel, and Lost and Found. “The Glory of Living” runs this weekend through October 23 at Strand Theater Company, 1823 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. This play follows the journey of Lisa, a 16-year old southern girl who grows up surrounded by abuse. A girl in a trailer park, a prostitute mother, and the charm of an older man leads to a roller-coaster ride of tragedy. Costs $15 general / $10 students and seniors. Friday, Oct. 15 is pay what you can day!

The Points— the local punk band will perform a show at the Velvet Lounge. The show begins at 9 p.m. The cost is $8. The venue is located at 915 U St. NW. Friday, Oct. 15.
