Weekend Hangover (Sept. 10-12, 2010)

It’s that time of the week ladies and gents! In this week’s edition of Weekend Hangover, we bring you a spotlight on the Philly Fringe performance arts festival that will continue through Sept. 18 in the City of Brotherly Love.  These events should hang you over until Monday.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

 

 

Open House Arts Festival—Saturday, Sept. 11, noon. The Kennedy Center kicks off its brand-new season with Celebrate Mexico 2010, a three-week-long commemoration of Mexico's 200 years of independence and 100 years since the 1910 revolution. Open House features artists from the Washington, D.C. region and Mexico in more than 20 performances, demonstrations, and events. Philly Fringe continues! The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival/ Philly Fringe is an internationally recognized presenter of performing arts. Check out the full list of Fringe performances taking place this weekend here . Below are a few shows that will take place this weekend that caught our attention:

 



Sanctuary
is a 55-minute long dance show choreographed and directed by Brian Sanders, described as “a dance of intense movement, ritual, and mistaken assumptions about the past.” The show runs until Sept. 18. Tickets are $25-30. Click here  to purchase.

 

 

 

True theatre at its finest, A Separate Sun “is the triumphant story of a woman's struggle to overcome abuse, drugs, and depression through music and song.” It stars Barrymore Award winner Joilet Harris. Music is by Emmy Award winner Bill Jolly. The script was written by playwright and journalist Joseph P. Blake. The last three shows take place this weekend on Friday, Sept. 10 and two shows on Saturday, Sept. 11 at The Arts Garage, 1533 Ridge Ave. 90 minutes. Tickets are $20. Click here  to purchase.


A New Shade of Blue
, produced by Destiny Productions Theater Ensemble is a 90-minute Philly Fringe show described as: a tribute to Billie Holiday, several legendary ladies of jazz, and other contributing artists, Destiny Productions Theater Ensemble offers a stirring performance of singing, acting, and dancing that is sure to entertain, educate, and inspire, while providing nostalgic moments from the Harlem Renaissance. Last show is this Sunday, Sept. 12 at Dave and Buster’s Show Room. Tickets are $20. Click here  to purchase.

BALTIMORE, MD

Zippy the Pinhead: The Musical auditions—Saturday, Sept. 11, 11 am- 1pm at Baltimore Theatre Project, 45 West Preston Street. Theatre Project is currently looking to hire a stage manager and audition chorus members.  Show dates are Nov. 12-21.  Rehearsals would be Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons starting ASAP until November 1, when rehearsals would take place every evening, with possible weekend and long tech rehearsals.  The stage manager would be PAID $600 and the chorus members PAID $200 for all rehearsals and shows.

Here's audition info for chorus members:

Seeking mid-range singers, comfortable with a variety of choral styles including doo wop and jazz.  Prepare 10 bars of a song that display range.  Some dance experience a plus, but not essential.  Sense of fun and at least a little knowledge of the comic strip are important!  Minorities encouraged to audition.  Auditions Sept. 11, 11 am – 1 pm.  Please call for an appointment: 410-752-8558.
