TV Spot Review: The Boondocks 302 "From Bitches to Rags"

Adult Swim
Last season, we were introduced to Thugnificent, a Dirty South MC who was responsible for the strangely catchy anthems “Booty Butt Cheeks,” “Stomp Em In Da Nutz,” and (my personal favorite) “F*ck Grandad.” He quickly became one of my favorite new additions to The Boondocks series and I figured he’d manifest into a fan favorite much like the way the Freeman Family, Ed Wuncler III, and Colonel Stinkmeaner did. With that kind of popularity, you would think that his career would reach unprecedented heights, but in the second episode of Season 3, “Bitches to Rags,” we (unfortunately) witness the fall of Thugnificent.
The Boondocks is no stranger to rap satire episodes. Hell, one of the series’ best episodes belongs to “The Story of Gangstalicious” (pt. 1 & 2) and “Shinin.” While“Bitches to Rags” doesn’t hold a candle to those incarnations, it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.
The episode starts off when Granddad notices that Dorothy the Car is about to be towed away. He immediately runs out the house to find out what’s going, but it turns that the repo man had the wrong address and was actually trying to tow away Thugnificent’s car. It turns out that our beloved Otis Jenkins (his government name) is going broke and needs a new hit album fast. His failure is due in part to the success of a rising, “snap-dancing,”teenage rapper named Sergeant Gutta (a clear spoof of Soulja Boy’Tell Em) and he is considered old school, even though he’s been around in the industry for about four years. In an effort to redeem his career, he tries to use the auto-tune effect for his new album and meets up with DJ Vlad (in a surprise guest appearance) for an interview on his radio show for VladTV.com . He gives a shout-out to the young, rising rappers (hilariously reading their names off of a list he wrote down before appearing on the radio show) and announcing his beef with Sgt. Gutta. To make matters worse, when album gets released, it barely sells anything while Sgt. Gutta takes shots at Thugnificent through YouTube (parodying Soulja Boy’s YouTube video blog dissing Ice-T), losing his record deal, and having the IRS take his home, certifying the end of his career.
“Bitches to Rags” deals with a popular pattern in the hip hop culture: the focus on the present. Whether it’s mainstream or independent, hip hop has always been about the “here-and-now.” Today, you’ll be lucky to catch someone bump a Public Enemy record as opposed to bumping a Lil Wayne record. A record that came out five years ago is considered ancient in the culture. The sad reality is that Thugnificent is no longer considered the next best thing and despite being around for only four years, he’s considered a relic.
The best moments of the episode belong to the animation. McGruder has often stated he’s a huge fan of Japanese animes and it’s evident within the sharp animation of the episode. Everything is smooth, alive, and so detailed. From the destruction of Thugnificent’s mansion to Granddad’s bunny slippers, this season is boasting some of the best animation in television right now.
Other favorite moments include Leonard literally explaining why working at Wendy’s for work 82 hours wouldn’t succeed in paying for Thugnificent’s house bills (that scene is a must watch), Thugnificent being interviewed for a job and hilariously blowing his chances (was anyone else surprised that this guy has a degree in Communications? One can’t help but wonder why he would have such difficulty finding a job), him trying to sell crack Boogie Nights style, and finding new hope in the world of reality television.
The episode’s biggest flaw is the fact that the plot has no real direction. It’s sporadically parodying the fall of a gangsta rapper without segueing it to ordinary world for people to relate to the humor.
Overall, a solid episode frustratingly not as memorable as the previous gangsta rap parodies on this show. Hopefully, we’ll see more of Thugnificent and his new reality TV show as he drives his UPS truck around town bumping “Booty Butt Cheeks.”
3.5 out of 5
(By the way folks, if you're curious to watch the infamous Soulja Boy video blog that has him dissing Ice-T, no worries, we got the clip right here).
