Last night, soul singer Darien graced the Ear Candy  stage with a live acoustic performance, blending sultry melodies with hip hop flare. The Mount Vernon, NY native started his career as a hip hop choreographer before venturing into rap and eventually finding his voice in soul music.

With music on XM and Sirius Satellite radio rotation, a Japanese distribution deal, and a full-length album under his belt, he is making strides in the indiestry (independent arts industry). Critics have likened his sound to that of D’Angelo, Musiq, John Legend and Stevie Wonder.

“I would say I’m influenced by all of those cats,” Darien said. “Those are all amazing musicians and to be in close company is amazing. I think we all pull from the same energy to create, but we all have something entirely different to say. If you really want to know what I’m about you got to listen to ‘If These Walls Could Talk.’  That album speaks in different ways than I’m sure their projects do.”

“If These Walls Could Talk” (Righteous Music Records 2009) is available on itunes — and on select shelves in Japan.
