Anyone who is huge fan of hip hop in the '80s and '90s knows all about Gang Starr, the legendary hip hop DJ/MC duo comprised of DJ Premier (born Chris Martin) and The Guru (born Keith Elam). In case you haven't heard the news, Guru is currently in the hospital after suffering a heart attack this past Sunday. He's currently in a coma and recently had surgery. According to DJ Premier, the surgery was successful and Guru is recovering. The Indiestry offers our condolences to Guru, his family, DJ Premier, and the 7 Grand Records family.
Gang Starr released their first album, No More Mr. Nice Guy, in 1989. With DJ Premier behind the boards, Guru has been rapping about positivity in the African American communities, his love for jazz music, and the influences of the Nation of Gods and Earths. The duo struck gold when they released Step in the Arena in 1991, often dubbed as one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time. Gang Starr's track record continued when they released classic singles in the '90s such as "DWYCK" with Nice & Smooth, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?," "Mass Appeal," "You Know My Steez," and "Full Clip."
Guru also has a well-known solo jazz-rap series called Jazzmatazz. The first volume was released in May 1993 and features classic singles like "Loungin'" with acclaimed jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, and "Trust Me" with acid jazz singer, N'Dea Davenport.
He recently has been working with protege, MC Solaar, and his last album, Guru 8.0: Lost and Found, was released last May.
