2009 Science/NSF International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge
Science and art collided in the 2009 Science/National Science Foundation (NSF) International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge. The annual Science magazine and NSF-sponsored competition showcased artistic pieces that illustrated major scientific principles and data. Science received 130 entries from 14 countries, 23 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Here is one of the winners in the illustration category:

"Branching Morphogenesis": This illustration by biologist Peter Lloyd Jones and architect Jenny E. Sabin of the University of Pennsylvania's Sabin + Jones LabStudio, is made of 75,000 interconnected cable zip ties (believe it or not). It illustrates the forces that are generated by human lung cells as they form networks over a large span of time.
