Recap: Not My Label by RULA

On Jan. 15, at Ambassador Theater
(at Flashpoint's Mead Theater), writer Rula performed a brand new piece called "Not My Label: A Journey of Discovery." This was Rula's first monologue performance...yes...FIRST, but you could not tell it from watching her take control of the stage. Without giving away too much, Rula acted out the story of a married woman trying to regain her inner-strength after an affair. However, there was much more to the story.

The intimate setting consisted of three chairs, black walls, Rula and the crowd. This set-up allowed the audience to feel like they were a part of every scene...like they were taking this journey with the writer. An excited and supportive crowd were captivated by Rula's very personal and emotional journey into self-exploration. They laughed at Rula's jokes. They empathized as she told the details of her family's response to her actions. There were whispers of "uh huh", "that's true", "oh no" and "wow."

In "Not My Label," Rula explores compassion, taboos, self-identity and many more themes, all in one monologue. The writer wants her story to urge people to accept each other for who they are on the inside, and not the labels that society gives us. "I have never been in your box," Rula exclaims in one scene.

Rula recieved a standing ovation for her bravery, as well as her performance. The Indiestry urges you to see this [owerful performance for yourself to find out the FULL story.

Take Note: Rula is in search of more venues to showcase "Not My Label." Contact her  (Alur) on Hubpages.
